Newburgh Eats: Part 1

In an effort to showcase some of the delicious dining options Newburgh has to offer we've decided to feature some of the eateries we visit when we're taking a break from reno-ing. There are a bunch of places to choose from so this will be an ongoing series, luckily, that means that we get to keep sampling all the good eats the city has to offer!

Rueben sandwich at Ms. Fairfax 

Ms. Fairfax on Liberty St. has the most amazing corned beef Rueben sandwich, make sure not to miss out on and their crêpes too! The owners and staff are super friendly and the outdoor seating is ideal for people watching in the summer time. 

Pulled Pork Nachos and the Barnyard Blast Burger at The Wherehouse

Good vibes and good food abound at The Wherehouse on the corner of Liberty St. and Ann St.  Check out their menu for a huge selection of food and beers. You should definitely check this place out next time you're in Newburgh, they often have live music and host the annual Psychedelic Zombie BBQ!

Chocolate Chip Cookie from 2 Alices

2 Alices Coffee Lounge is a must visit if only to get one of their addicting chocolate chip cookies. They've got coffee, pastries and other small bites on offer in their spacious lounge on Broadway. It's a great space to grab your caffeine fix and catch up on emails or read the paper.  It is also right around the corner from Safe Harbor's new outdoor performance space that is currently being constructed.

Renovating in Historic Newburgh

Newburgh has a large historic district that includes many buildings that have architectural significance. The different architectural styles that can be seen in Newburgh's East End Historic District include Italianate, Greek Revival and Victorian among others. When renovating a property in Newburgh special consideration must be given if it falls within the historic district. Our current project is a property within the historic district so we've gathered some information that has helped us.

The city website is a great resource as it contains information about purchasing, renovating and project funding. The East End Historic District came about because buildings in Newburgh were being torn down without consideration to their historical significance thus the focus is on repairing buildings not replacing them. The guidelines for restoration discusses what is historically appropriate "to  enhance the prospect of preserving the significant architectural and cultural assets of the East End Historic District for the betterment of the City and well-being of its residents." Luckily there is a grant that commercial property owners can apply for if they happen to be repairing the facade of their storefront. Sodacova is hoping to receive this grant so we can make our building look as good as some of the other storefronts that have been recently renovated on Liberty Street. 

While having guidelines to follow can sometimes mean more work it also means that we are helping preserve what makes Newburgh so special.
